"A+ for Kids. A+ for Parents. Our take after attending the open night performance Wednesday night: If you do nothing else this year with your kids, get tickets to this sure-to-sell out theater production at Chicago's LaSalle Bank Theatre. From a stage that employs techniques more reminiscent of the movie "Grease" than the TV "High School Musical" to creative sets that are as energetic as the performers, this show will keep you and your kids nodding your heads and on the edge of your seats from the opening scene and on your feet dancing and cheering by the end. This is a can't miss for families. You might even want to see it twice." -Tamara L. O'Shaughnessy, Chicago Parent

"Disney struck gold with 'High School Musical' long before the curtain rose on the stage version of the made-for-cable film. And the mine shows no signs of running dry. The wide eyes and wider smiles on the faces of exuberant tweens and teens proclaimed 'HSM' a hit, and the response from enthusiastic parents (including Michelle Obama who attended with her two children) confirmed it. Sweetly innocuous, unabashedly corny and undeniably infectious, this show is critic-proof. No scribe can stop the 'HSM' juggernaut. There's no reason to." -Barbara Vitello, Chicago Daily Herald

"If the reaction to Wednesday night's premiere of High School Musical at the La Salle Bank Theatre is any indication of what we can expect when the show hits Toronto this September, then David Mirvish is only going to have one problem on his hands: Crowd control. 'I've never seen anything like it,' said one veteran usher as she watched the capacity crowd of 1,900 people jump to their feet to cheer the latest manifestation of one of the biggest media events of this still-new century. Even Michelle Obama (wife of presidential hopeful Barack) stood docilely on line with her children, waiting to feel the thrill of a show that has captured the imagination of Americans the way she hopes her husband's campaign will." -Richard Ouzounian, Toronto Star

Excerpted from a review by Chris Jones
Disney's "High School Musical" is an eye-popping phenomenon. How big? At Wednesday night's chaotic official national opening in Chicago of the Disney stage-musical version, Michelle Obama could be seen, kids in tow, standing unnoticed at the back of a long line of fans trying to meet Monique Coleman, a young cast member from the original television movie, who'd been flown in for the occasion and found herself almost crushed by diminutive autograph seekers in the orchestra of the LaSalle Bank Theatre.
Director Jeff Calhoun delivers a pumped-up, good-time dance party of a kid-friendly, Broadway-style show that delivers excitement and spectacle.
